Villa Caldogno, Pagello, Nordera

Via Zanella, 3 - 36030 - Caldogno (VI)

Build in: 1500
Architect: Attributed to Andrea Palladio
It is around 1565 that Angelo Caldogno, an aristocratic from Vicenza, established his country  residence  in the villa built and designed by Andrea Palladio in the small town of Caldogno, near Vicenza. The calendar year (1570) marked on the front, preceded by the name of the owner, "Angelus Calidonius Luschi filius," gives us the certainty that by this time not only the walls but also the widespread interior decoration were completed. Although not included in the "Four Books of Architecture", Villa Caldogno is considered an autograph work of Andrea Palladio who worked, as evidenced by recent studies on a pre-existing structure, perhaps in the first half of the XV century. This structure is clearly visible in the basement. Particularly significant is the façade, with three large arches chiaroscuro, the embossed frame that marks the entrance slightly forward at the two side sections. A triangular gable, above a high band of the blind wall, seals the middle section, the base of which develops a singular and ingenious scale polygonal base. Bands of different height and different thickness modulate the whole factory which is terminated by a molded cornice. The back keeps close similarities with the main one, but similarities have been altered by the construction of two square turrets that surround the spiral staircase to access the attic. These new volumes (source seventeenth) define a deep terrace which extends for the entire width of the facade. Around the median axis, consisting of the atrium and the main hall are arranged in either side of the villa three rooms: the largest in the corners, children among themIt is rich painted the decoration of the interior (loggia, central hall, rooms west side) due in large part to the hand of Giovanni Antonio Fasolo (1530-1572), John the Baptist Zelotti (1526-1578), Giulio Carpioni (1613-1679). Other artists intervened in the decoration of the two friezes of the eastern sector of the villa. The annexes The barn and dovecote, built at a certain distance and perpendicular to the House, were built in the mid-seventeenth century. The  intervention is documented  in the design and implementation of the articles of the famous architect Antonio Pizzocaro (1605-1680). Always the same period are the statues that adorn the various entrances to the property. They are attributed to the workshop of Bendazzoli. The villa is the town library and promotes inside and cultural activities in the surrounding park.
