Casa del Petrarca

Via Vallese 4, 35032, Arqu Petrarca - PD

Construction: 1200-1800

Environmental context: Peri-urban

In 1369 Francesco Petrarca (Arezzo 1304-Arquà 1374), tired of the continuous pilgrimage and already became elderly, moved to a house in the Euganean village of Arquà and lived there until the end of his life. In Arquà Francesco lived serenely his last years, surrounded by old and new friends and by his relatives: the daughter Francesca, his son-in-law Francescuolo, his little granddaughter Eletta. Here he continued his studies and died in the night between the 18th and the 19th of July 1374. The house has been given to Petrarca by Francesco I da Carrara, lord of Padova and true friend of the poet. Petrarca decided to renovate the house adapting it to his needs. He followed directly the works. He decided to connect the two main bodies of the house and to live in the upper storey, while the building on the right, where there was the main entrance, was dedicated to the servants. In front of the house there was the garden and on the backside an orchard. Excellences of the villa: the Venus room was probably the poet’s bedroom; there is indeed a fresco representing Petrarca seated near to a source with a book in his hands and in front of him there is a woman with a child. Probably the fresco refers to the lyric “Qual più diversa et nova”, number 135 of the Canzoniere. The walls of Petrarca’s small office show trail of the original fourteenth-century decoration. In this room are preserved the chair and the old wardrobe-library used by the poet. The Vision room is painted with motives deriving from the Petrarca’s lyric “Standomi un giorno solo a la fenestra”, number 323 of the Canzoniere, also known as Canzoniere delle Visioni. In the Lucrezia room there is a fine decoration painted in XVI century representing the Roman heroine Lucrezia dying.
